Our interview series is based in the Native Senegalese language of Wolof. This is to ensure accessibility and break down language barriers for farmers in rural communities who don't speak Universal lanugages such as French and English. In our interview series we share knowledge and best practices within out farming communities and beyond.

How To Graft A Lime Tree
In this episode of Farmers Friends, we talk about the techniques of lime grafting with Doudou Sarr, a plant expert from Niaye Agro Services. We discuss the process of lime #grafting focusing on the Tahiti Lime Tree. Tahitian limes typically have no viable seeds, which means that they require grafting to another lime tree in order for the blossoms to be pollenated. Grafting is a technique used to join parts from two or more plants so that they grow as a single plant. In general, a wound is created on one of the plants, and the other is inserted into that wound so each plant's tissues can grow together. The wound needs to be protected until it heals to avoid pests and diseases entering the graft. In addition, both plants being used in the grafting procedure have to be compatible in both rootstock (healthy root system and some portion of the stem) and scion (shoot or twig of a plant) for it to work properly. The same plant species and genus are more successful than plants from a different genus. Benefits of grafting include, better resistance to pathogens, drought and other environmental stresses, more vigorous growth, and higher yield. It is also a method of using a root system better adapted to soil or climate than that produced naturally by a non-grafted plant.

Our research revealed that many farmers in Senegal refrain from planting peppers during the rainy season due to soil-borne organisms that cause damage to the plants. This season, we experimented with bucket farming to see if our Habanero plants would thrive despite these challenges.

Solar Powered Irrigation System
In our Farmer's Friend interview, Cheikh showcases the solar-powered water system at the Afragro farm, which facilitates water supply and circulation throughout the year. Diourbel, like many cities in Senegal, experiences an average daily high temperature above 100°F. June is the hottest month in Diourbel, with an average high of 99°F and a low of 76°F. Given the high temperatures, it is practical to utilize solar-powered energy.
